Thus, according to the foreign travellers, it seems certain that Vijayanagara possessed one of the many attributes of an ideal capital as described in the mediaeval Hindu books. In the *Sukranīti*, for example, birds are mentioned, along with cattle and other animals, as some of the attractions of the place where the capital city is to be built.¹
