Both according to foreign travellers and inscriptions, the regions on the Western Ghauts were dotted with rich cities. Speaking in general about these, Barbosa remarks: "This range is peopled in several parts, with good towns and villages, very luxuriant in water and delicious fruit".² Among such thriving cities mention must be made Uddhare. It was the capital of the Eighteen Kaṃpaṇas. An inscription dated A.D. 1380 says the following about it: *adu nānā-dēva-harmya-pryutav atula-vāpilaṭakāñchitam sampadamam tāld-irppa viprādy-akhila-jana-samētam lasat-purpa-vāṭi viditōdyānādi-yuktam prakaṭa-kalam-jāla-prasū tātōrppuda sakala-muni-prēma-dharmmābhirāmam ene mere Uddhare.*³
