Epigraphical evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of the theory that Vijayanagara existed in A.D. 1336 or thereabouts, and that it was founded by Harihara with the advice of Vidyāraṇya. The controversy about the date of the foundation of the capital is so important that we may be permitted to discuss it at length in this chapter. Inscriptional evidence about the existence of the capital in A.D. 1336 centres round these following epigraphs, which deserve to be examined with the aid of contemporary records.
