It was not only the Brahmans of Karṇāṭaka who could lay pretensions to learning and piety. The Kāśmīr Brahmans too were famous for their wisdom. Thus are these latter described in an inscription dated A.D. 1368. "......like incarnations of Vidyēśvara, pre-eminent by their virtues and the country of their birth, travellers to the farthest point of the *charaṇanīya-aticharaṇāmnāya*, daily observers of all the rites appointed in the pure Śivāmnāya, ever devoted to the worship of the Aṣṭhamūrti, Kāśmīr Brahmans."³
