About these eunuchs Paes relates they they guarded both the apartments of the king and of the queens. To the remarks we have cited in this connection, we may add the following: "Amongst these eunuchs the king has some who are great favourites, and who sleep where he sleeps; they receive a large salary".¹ According to him, "fully three or four hundred" eunuchs formed the escort of the queens.²
