v2.c22.s2.1

We have brief notices of rewards for public service in Kṛishṇa Dēva Rāya's *Amuktamālyada*. "It is good that a king should reward a worthy man having well tested him, before himself requesting him and before a third party recommends. The reward should come unawares like the fruits of the jack-tree and like a dream."³ But inscriptions contain more information on the subject. The rulers recognized the services of their subjects, and conferred on them rewards in the shape of grants of land and titles and honours together with privileges and rights.
