Students of Karṇāṭaka history are aware of the pañcha-mahāśabda which occurs so frequently in the early inscriptions. The musical instrument needed for the pañcha-mahā-śabda, according to an inscription dated A. D. 1092, were the following: tivari (? trumpet), daṭṭa, kahaṇḍikke, jaya-gaṇṭe, and kāḷe or (horn).⁴
