v2.c25.s1.39

Shuja dismounts from his elephant. This was the end of the struggle.‡ All was now lost. The sight of the empty hawda, visible from the furthest limits of the field, struck terror into his soldiers' hearts. Their master was slain, so they imagined. For whom would they fight any longer? They had been sorely tried by Aurangzib's artillery and wanted only a decent excuse for flight. This was now found in the riderless elephant. In a moment the whole army broke and fled.
