∗ The Niazai Afghans were pushed out of Bannu by the Marwals in the 16th century. They then "spread across the Khattak-Niazai hills and colonized the plains upon both banks of the Indus." (Imp. Gaz. iv. 394). A. N. 828 says that they were removed by the Mughal Government from Dhankot (which Aurangzib had renamed Muazzam-nagar) to the west bank of the Indus. The Ain-i-Akbari, ii. 401, (Jarrett), gives Dhankot ferry as "the place where the Indus is crossed for reaching the Bangash country." Erskine locates it near Khushal-garh "or perhaps Kalabagh", which latter is less likely.
