v3.c38.s2.24

(13) In Kashmir there were many actors or mummers who used to go out of the chief town dressed in their trappings and playing on instruments, to welcome princes and other high persons on the way. Towards the close of his life Aurangzib ordered the local viceroy to put this practice down and take away all their musical instruments wherever found, quoting at the end of his letter the sacred text, "For the sake of God it is binding on us all to order lawful acts and prohibit uncanonical ones." (K.T. 77a.)
