The Queda Merchant included in its cargo two lakhs of Rupees worth of goods, the private venture of the governor of Surat. Its capture naturally turned his heart against the English. In August 1698 came an imperial order that the English French and Dutch would be held responsible for all losses at sea and that the three nations should pay total damages amounting to 14 lakhs,—the English alone being charged two lakhs for the *Queda Merchant*.
