The crime did not benefit Bijay Singh at all. The confusion quickly subsided; Jayapa’s son Jankoji was proclaimed as the new chief in the masterless camp. The timid proposal to fall back on Ajmir was at once rejected as a cowardly surrender of Maratha rights and a blow to Maratha prestige throughout Hindustan. The siege trenches at Nagor were manned as firmly and the Maratha armies throughout the entire theatre of war presented as bold a front as before. This prompt and vigorous control of the situation was the work of Jayāpā’s brother Dattāji, the guardian of the lad Janko, and a first-rate soldier in courage and enterprise, though lacking in sagacity and diplomatic tact.
