On 3rd November Rānā Khān himself followed them and was joined by Begam Samru’s full contingent, his own delay being again due to the clamours of his unpaid soldiery. Rāyāji Pātil and other Deccani sardars had about 8,000 men under them. In addition, 22 guns and 8,000 more men of the Jat Rajah crossed the Jamuna near Shergarh and moved up the Doab to join Rāyāji. Rānā Khan now arrived with 20,000 men and took the lead in the chase. In a few weeks a further addition was made to the hunt. Ali Bahadur, at the head of the contingent furnished by the Peshwa’s Government, had at long last arrived at Mahadji’s side at Mathurā (6th November.) On the 17th of the month he was detached against Ghulām Qādir.
