∗ The Marātha envoy's despatches carelessly name Sher S. as her choice, but Tod is right in saying that she wanted to adopt Mān Singh (the son of Gumān S.) whom his uncle Sher S. had adopted. The letter from Holkar's camp in Jaipur (4 May 1792) clearly says that the king's grandson (and not son) was proposed to be declared his heir. (Chandrachud D. ii. 91.)
