For the origins of the Sindhia-Holkar rivalry we have to go back sixty years to the days of the great Baji Rao, under whom the first Holkar and the first Sindhia made their names in Maratha history. Malhar Rao Holkar started earlier in the race for greatness and he gained a higher rank in the Peshwā’s army than Rānoji Sindhia could do before his death.
