There is no doubt, however, that Vīra Pāṇḍya and Sundara Pāṇḍya had fallen out and were fighting each other at the time of the Muhammadan invasion of South India. In this respect, Wassaf’s statements receive confirmation from Amir Khusru who says that Malik Kafur ‘was informed that the two Rais of Ma’bar, the eldest named Bir Pāṇḍya, the youngest Sundar Pāṇḍya, who had up to that time continued on friendly terms, had advanced against each other with hostile intentions.’² It is difficult to follow the details of this war between the two Pāṇḍya rulers given by Wassaf as the names of places have changed beyond recognition at the hands of the Muhammadan historian.
