² The most important inscriptions of the later Pāṇdyas have been carefully edited by Mr. T. A. Gopinatha Rao (Trav. Arch. Series, vol. i, pp. 43-152; pp. 251-82) whose critical studies went a long way to introduce order into a part of the subject which was till then in the most chaotic condition. In my account I follow Mr. Rao in the main.
