The bulk of the early inscriptions employ the script known as *Vaṭṭeḻuttu* in the Tamil parts and the grantha in the Sanskrit parts; *Vaṭṭeḻuttu* gave way to the present Tamil script about the time of the Chola conquest of the Pāndya country, say about the end of tenth century A.D.³ or the middle of the eleventh. It may also be noted that several of the later inscriptions are in excellent verse while the longer records of the early Pāndyas attain to great literary merit as prose compositions.
