¹ The late Prof. M. Seshagiri Sastri's little book on *Tamil Literature* (S. V. & Co., Madras, 1904) contains an acute but very elaborate, and occasionally perverse criticism of the legends relating to the Śangam. Mr. P. Sundaram Pillai summarily dismisses this commentary as 'apocryphal' by saying 'It is doubtful whether there existed any prose literature at all in the days of Nakkīrar.' *Madras Christian College Magazine*, vol. ix, p. 128. For quite another view of this commentary see Dr. S. K. Aiyangār, *Beginnings*, pp. 250-6.
