² Kanakasabhai (p. 56 of his *Tamils*) seems to have exaggerated the exclusiveness and the fewness of the Brahmins in South India in those days. Exact comparisons being impossible, only general impressions can be recorded and I am unable to see that the Brahmins were less numerous then (proportionately to the population) or more exclusive than in recent times.
