¹ Mr. Venkayya was naturally in great difficulty in 1893 when he tried to identify the places mentioned in the Madras Museum plates. But he spent great ingenuity over the names Kankabhūmi and Kānjivāyppērūr and tried to connect them with Tirukkaḷukkuṉṟam and Kāñchīpuram. (I.A., xxii, pp. 66-7.) All this was of course wrong. Kankabhūmi in the context only stands for some distant land up to which the fame of the Pāṇḍyan king reached and has nothing to do with ‘Kites’ or the Gangas. See e.g., under ‘Kanka’ in Fleet’s Topographical List, I.A., xxii, p. 180. Mr. T. A. Gopinatha Rao has drawn attention to the mention of ‘கொங்கிற் காஞ்சிவாய்ப் பேரூர்’ in the Periyapurāṇam, v. 88 in Eyarkōn-kalik-kāmanāyaṉār Purāṇam. I am, however, unable to trace the presence of even the ruins of a Viṣṇu temple in this place, if it is identical with Pērur in the Coimbatore district.
