31. *IHQ.* vi 597 ff. Without stopping to argue the matter fully, M. Sylvain Lévi finds an easy explanation in ‘Tamil nationalism’ (p. 607) for the view which ascribes an early date to the poem. The relation between the *Nyāyapravēśa* of Diṅnāga and the *Maṇimēkalai* xxix is not simple, as readers of Professor Krishnaswami Aiyangar's *Maṇimēkhalai in its Historical Setting* must see. And a careful examination of the other systems of philosophy propounded in that canto shows that there are many truly ancient doctrines in it which would not be easy to explain on the basis of a late date such as the sixth century A.D.
