There is perfect concord between the Śaṅgam anthologies, the notices of South India in classical works of the early centuries of the Christian era, like the *Periplus* and Ptolemy’s geography, and the numerous finds of Roman coins of the early Roman Empire in several places in Southern India. This would lead any unbiassed student to the conclusion that the Tamil anthologies were contemporary with the classical works and the Roman coins.¹¹³
