17. The text has: *iru-peru vēndarum oru kaḷat-taviya* (146, *Porunar*). Naccinārkkiniyar takes this to mean that they died (*paḍumpaḍi*); but the Cēra, we know, sustained a wound in his back, and committed suicide by the process of slow starvation - *Vaḍakkiruttal*, on which see *Puṟam* 65 ll. 9-11 and Pandit V.
