They are generally free from the monotony and the artificiality that mar much of later Tamil poetry. And they do not lack width of range. The short poem, the long ode, the dramatic epic and the religious lyric were all known; and in the *Kuṟaḷ* of Tiruvaḷḷuvar we have a work that transcends the limitations of time and place.
