Puhār or Kāvirippūmpaṭṭinam was one of the few great cities of the time, and, being on the sea coast, was also the great emporium of the kingdom. The city, its port and trade are fully described in the poems. The author of the *Śilappadikāram* says that the wise considered the prosperity of Puhār as stable as the Himalaya and the Podiya mountains;⁶⁶ again,
