Some earlier versions of these incidents substitute the general phrase *Vēḷkulattaraśar* or *Vēḷpulattaraśu* i.e., the Cāḷukyan king or kings, for Vikkalan, and the specific place-name Aḷatti for the region from Nangili to Tungabhadrā.³²
