The inscriptions of Kulōttunga himself contain accounts of two Cōḷa invasions of Kalingam, one of which is, no doubt, the subject of the celebrated *Paraṇi* of Jayangoṇḍār.⁹² The first invasion of Kalingam is mentioned in inscriptions of the twenty-sixth year,⁹³ and from the brevity with which the subjection of Kalingam is mentioned on this occasion, we may conclude that this was the war in which Vikramacōḷa distinguished himself as a young man. The second and later invasion of Kalinga is mentioned in the inscriptions of the forty-second and subsequent years;⁹⁴ this is the invasion which gave the occasion for the *Paraṇi*, and apparently Vikramacōḷa had no part in it.
