Names of individuals very often gave little indication of their social status. Thus Ariñjimādēvaḍigaḷ, for example, was not, as her name might lead one to suppose, a queen herself, but only a queen’s maid (*peṇḍāṭṭi*); and her daughter, who lived in concubinage with a certain Arumoḻidēvan, bore the name Bhaṭṭan Gandarāditti.²⁶ Numerical names like Munnūṟṟuvan, Īrāyiravan and so on were apparently borne by members of all classes.
