As evidence of communal ownership of land in Cōḷa times may be noticed the terms *sabhāmañjikkam*² and *ūr-mañjikkam*,³ and *ūrppodu*,⁴ the escheat to the village of land that was in arrears for the *iṟai* on it,⁵ and the sale of waste land by the village for being reclaimed and put to some specific use.⁶ An inscription of the reign of Sundara Cōḷa from Madhurāntakam records the sale by the *Sabhā* in a public manner (*sabhai-vilai*) of some land described clearly as part of the unappropriated common land of the village.⁷
