The *madhurāntakan māḍai* was still current in the reign of Kulōttunga I;¹⁶ and it is said to have been equivalent to the *kaḻañju* of the fineness of 9½ *māṟi* or two *kāśus*.¹⁷ That this high standard was not maintained at all times in the actual currency goes without saying, and the inscriptions give valuable evidence on the extent of the departure from the standard at different times and places.
