Popular education in a wide sense was amply provided for by the recitation and exposition in temples and other public places of the national epics like the *Rāmāyaṇa* and the *Mahābhārata*, and the Purāṇas. Sometimes the elements of philosophy from the stand-point of particular sects were also similarly expounded, for instance the Śivadharma,⁴ Sōmasiddhānta, and Rāmānuja-bhāṣya.
