Before leaving the *maṭhas*, attention must be drawn to a popular riot described in a record of the second year of Rājarāja III⁷⁸ as *guhai-iḍi-kalaham*, a revolt in which monasteries were demolished. This occurred in the twenty-second regnal year of Kulōttunga III, a.d. 1200, and in it, the property belonging to a *guhai* in Tirutturaipūṇḍi suffered badly. The causes of this demonstration are not stated and we cannot even say whether it was directed against this particular *guhai* or *guhais* in general; on the latter assumption, it is indeed very strange that we hear nothing more of it than this casual reference to it.⁷⁹
