Under the Cōḷas of the line of Vijayālaya may be said to commence the Silver Age of South Indian Śaivism and Vaiṣṇavism. Difficult as it is to propose precise dates in the present state of the evidence, we may still be certain that the sacred hymns of the *nāyanārs* and the *āḻvārs* were arranged in canonical form some time in the eleventh century.
