The *Yāpparuṅgalam* is a treatise on prosody of which the *Kārigai* is an abridgement. It is unique in its range and it offers an exhaustive treatment of the variety of metres in Tamil; it is even more valuable for the fine commentary to which it has given rise. A large number of literary specimens otherwise unknown have been preserved in this commentary. The same observation holds good of the commentary on the *Kārigai* by Guṇasāgara, who is believed to have been a disciple of Amitasāgara, the pupil taking the name of his *guru’s guru*.
