G. Jouveau-Dubreuil, the founder of the scientific study of South Indian architecture, observed:³ 'The Pallavas excelled in sculpture. The Cōḷas were above all architects. Their style is distinguished by simplicity and grandeur'. Cōḷa sculptors, we shall see, however, were no less noteworthy than Cōḷa architects and in no way inferior to Pallava sculptors in stone; their achievements in big bronzes were unsurpassed for their beauty and for the technical skill in the sheer manipulation of large masses of metal.
