In the late Cōḷa period (1070-1250) temple construction was as active as ever. We must pass by all the smaller temples, because not only are they numerous and very much like one another, but in several cases owing to the changes wrought by time they have become composite structures made up of parts belonging to different epochs not always easy to distinguish. We shall consider briefly only the two large temples which stand in the main line of the evolution of Cōḷa architecture and constitute landmarks in it.⁴¹
