Side-lights on Cōḷa history are often obtained from the inscriptions of neighbouring dynasties. The Rāṣṭrakūṭa inscriptions of the time of Kṛṣṇa III, those of the Eastern Cāḷukyas and some even of the Eastern Gaṅgas, and the inscriptions of the Western Cāḷukyas, often go to confirm or modify impressions obtained by a study of Cōḷa records. The records of prominent feudatory dynasties, or of individuals like Kōpperuñjiṅga, become important as we approach the period of the decline of Cōḷa power. Hoysaḷa records also explain in part the politics of the period of decline.
