¹ The foundation of the city, as is well, known, is ascribed by Indian writers to Udayi, son of Ajātaśatru. Curiously enough a tradition quoted by Diodorus, presumably on the authority of Megasthenes (McCrindle, *Ancient India as described by Megasthenes and Arrian*, p. 37), gives the credit to Heracles.
