Fleet (*I.A.* 1892, pp. 156 ff : *J.R.A.S.*, 1909, p. 24n) regards the story as presented in the *Rājavalikathe* as "probably of quite modern invention". Even the legend in its earlier form "has not the slightest historical value as affecting Chandragupta, the grandfather of Aśoka". Smith (*E.H.I.*, p. 154) however thinks "that the tradition probably is true in its main outline."
