The name of the Vākāṭakas has been connected by some historians with the little village of Bagat in Bundelkhand, while others are inclined to treat it as of Andhra origin. They rose to power at a time when the last of the Sātavāhanas had ceased to rule in Madhya Pradesh and the Śaka satraps had exhausted themselves by their long struggles with the Sātavāhanas. The Purāṇas mention Vindhyaśakti as their founder and Purikā in ‘Berar’ as their early capital, and also testify to the expansion of their power north of the Vindhyas as far as Vidiśā. This rise of the Vākāṭakas may be placed in the last quarter of the third century A.D.
