Narendrasena (445-65) was beset by difficulties at the beginning of his reign. The Nala king Bhavadattavarman ruling in Bastar state invaded the Vākātaka kingdom and for a time his victory seemed to be complete. Narendrasena, however, soon recovered his strength and turned the tables on the enemy, even though his grand-uncle Kumāragupta was in no position to help him on account of the danger to his own empire from the Hūnas. Malwa, Mekalā and Kosala also passed under the rule of Narendrasena for a time. His son, Prithvisheṇa II, the last known king of the main line, had to retrieve the fortunes of his family twice. His opponents were very probably the Nalas, and possibly, the Traikūṭakas of southern Gujarat.
