After their overthrow, Pulakeśin II sought to measure his strength against Mahendravarman I whose growing power rivalled his own. His forces penetrated far into the Pallava territory and were not stopped until they reached Pullalūr, only fifteen miles north of the Pallava capital. There a pitched battle was fought, and although Mahendravarman was able to save his capital he lost the northern provinces to his enemy. This was the beginning of the long-drawn-out conflict between the Chālukyas and the Pallavas.
