A word must now be said about the rise of the Pāṇdya kingdom. It started on its career about the same time as the Pallava, but we know little of the history of its first two monarchs, Kaḍungōn (590-620) and his son Māravarman Avaniśūḷāmaṇi (620-45). There is no doubt, however, that they put an end to Kalabhra rule in their part of the country and revived the Pāṇdya power. The third, Śēndan or Jayantavarman, imposed his rule on the Chera country and took to himself the title Vānavan. His son Arikēsari Māravarman (670-700) was a great soldier who fought many battles for the extension of Pāṇdya power, some of them against his Pallava contemporary. It is very probable that he entered into an alliance with the Pallavas' enemy on the other side, namely Chālukya Vikramāditya I.
