Śrimārā’s defeat at Ariśil was not an isolated event. His aggressive campaigns which had earned for him the title Paracakrakolāhala (Confounder of the Circle of his Enemies) naturally roused the hostility of his neighbours. Sena II (851-85) of Ceylon, nephew and successor of Sena I, had allied himself with the Pallavas and with a pretender to the Pāṇdya throne. He sent an expedition into the Madura kingdom at about the same time as the battle of Ariśil and the invasion was a complete success. The capital was sacked, Śrimārā died of his wounds, and his son Varaguṇavarman II was enthroned in his place by the Sinhalese commander-in-chief (862).
