From about 940 Parāntaka began to experience increasing difficulty in defending his empire. His loyal feudatory, Pṛthvīpati II, was no more; and as Būtuga II, the ruling Ganga monarch, had married a Rāṣṭrakūṭa princess (the sister of Krishna III) the alliance between Gangas and Rāṣṭrakūṭas became closer. Those Bāṇas and Vaidumbas whom the Chola had uprooted were also by the side of the Rāṣṭrakūṭa ruler. To meet the expected trouble from the north-west frontier of his kingdom, Parāntaka stationed his eldest son Rājāditya there with a large army including an elephant corps and some cavalry, and sent another son, Arikulakesari, to assist him.
