IN this and the succeeding chapters we shall try to sketch the social and economic conditions that prevailed in South India from the sixth to the seventeenth centuries A.D., and to trace in outline the principal movements of culture in the spheres of literature, religion and art. The ground is vast and the material abundant; only a summary treatment of selected topics will be possible within the limits of this book.
