A family of hereditary poets held the position of vidyācakravarti (poet-laureate) in the Hoysala court but their names have not been preserved. One of them, who seems to have obtained recognition also from the Pāṇdyas and other rulers of the South, wrote the quasi-historical Gadyakarṇāmṛita, an eloquent prose work dealing with the war between Hoysala Narasimha II and the Pāṇdyas in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. Another composed a poem of high quality, the Rukmiṇikalyāṇa, and wrote commentaries on the Alaṅkārasarvasva and the Kāvyaprakāśa—two celebrated works on poetics; this was in the reign of Ballāla III (1291-1342).
