There were notable grammarians also in Kerala. The Vāraruchasaṅgraha is a concise treatise in twenty-five verses (kārikas) on the major topics of Vyākaraṇa; the commentator on the work, Nārāyaṇa Nambūri of Agnihotri illam near Cochin, says that the author Vararuchi was almost the equal of Pāṇini. Nārāyaṇa has also written an extensive commentary on the Bhāshya pradīpa of Kaiyaṭa. We owe to another Nambūri of Kāśi illam the voluminous Vrittiratnam, a metrical commentary in verses on the Kāśikā-vritti; the same author wrote a Laghu vritti in 2720 verses, and the Bālamitram, an elucidation of Mādhava's Dhātuvritti. Among other works may be noted the Subhadrāharaṇa, a Kāvya in twenty cantos, by another Nārāyaṇa Nambūri which illustrates the rules of Pāṇini mostly by anuṣṭup verses and excels in lucidity the similar works of Bhaṭṭi and Bhauma.
