A little later than Tirumangai, about the close of the eighth and the beginning of the ninth century, came a number of ālvārs. Periyālvār, a Brahmin of Śrivilliputtūr, won a religious disputation in the court of the Pāndya king Śrīmāra Śri Vallabha (815-62).
